Welcome to 2018!

Lots of changes are coming to the AFP Northwest Ohio Chapter, and we are pleased to share them with you.

 

2018 Officers & Board of Directors

John Lechman, CFREFirst, we welcome our new 2018 officers and board, led by president John D. Lechman, CFRE. Each is anxious to get started on a new year. Please feel free to contact any board member if you have any questions, suggestions for 2018, or would like to assist on a committee.

 

New Chapter Administrator

Jacquie SkrzypiecThe board welcomes Jacquie Skrzypiec, AFPNWO's new Chapter Administrator. Many of you might know her from her work with our National Philanthropy Day awards luncheon since 2013.

Many associations like ours use a professional, paid administrator to manage and perform the daily operational work for the chapter. After much consideration, and review of competitive bids, the 2017 board engaged with the services of Jacquie. This move will assist us with our online presence, streamline processes, improve communication, free up board members to operate more strategically, and provide many incremental savings in services and resources that we essentially share with Jacquie’s other professional clients.

Jacquie will manage the daily operations of the AFP Northwest Ohio Chapter, including but not limited to: meeting and webinar registrations, CFRE accreditation, and payments for all chapter events.

One important resource that Jacquie brings is that she can serve as a liaison between Chapter members and AFP International (AFPI). She has more than 15 years of experience with AFPI and knows who to contact to resolve issues with membership, benefits, contributions, and more.  While members are always welcome to contact AFPI or a board member directly, if you have been frustrated resolving an issue or would like to take advantage of her experience in this area, please feel free to contact her.

New AFPNWO Website

Part of Jacquie's new responsibilities is the development and maintenance of AFPNWO's new website: www.afpnwo.org. It is our goal to make this website more responsive to our members' needs than the previous platform.

This new website will have current information about upcoming meetings and webinars, membership information, and Chapter initiatives such as diversity and inclusion, mentoring, scholarships, and more. We are still in the process of uploading and editing content, but we would love to hear your feedback and suggestions for improvement. Please email your comments to info@afpnwo.org.

AFPI's Tips for Addressing the New Tax Bill

With the recently approved tax reform bill significantly affecting charitable giving, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFPI) offers advice and perspective to both charities and donors as they look at giving in 2017 and beyond.

AFP reminds charities and fundraisers that it’s important to keep an optimistic tone and perspective moving forward. While many charities may focus on the difficult challenges ahead, it’s important that they balance that sense with optimism about how they’re still making a difference and changing the world. People will always want to help, and charities need to inspire them to action more than ever.

With the tax bill lowering corporate tax rates, charities may find more funding and resources from corporations if they can develop effective partnerships that make sense for both organizations.

“Again, most donors give because they want to make a difference, and tax incentives are not WHY they give,” said Geiger. “But taxes and incentives may dictate how they give, and [there] are options some donors may take to be charitable and be effective with their taxes at the same time.”

Ultimately, the best strategies are about how effectively charities engage donors and tell their stories of impacts and outcome. No matter the tax code or the economic environment, charities that can connect with donors, show the impact of their programs and inspire donors to get involved will always be successful.

Amy Eisenstein, ACFREAFPNWO and the Center for Nonprofit Resources are hosting The Major Gift Challenge: How to Get Started Raising Major Gifts, presented by Amy Eisenstein, ACFRE, author, speaker, and trainer.

Most nonprofit professionals are not effectively soliciting major gifts for their organizations. If you want to start or grow your individual giving/major gifts program, this session is for you. Whether a major gift for your organization is $1,000 or $10,000, you will learn how ask and receive more major gifts this year.

Amy's published books include Major Gift Fundraising for Small ShopsRaising More with Less, and 50 A$ks in 50 Weeks. Check out her blog and video posts  for free fundraising tips and best practices.

2018 Meeting Fees

Our monthly meeting is an important way to stay connected, take away new ideas and perspectives, stay up to date on industry trends, meet colleagues, and even find opportunities.

For many years, the chapter held the meeting fee at $15 for members to encourage attendance and make the meetings accessible. Naturally, the market did not see things exactly as we did. All costs related to holding the meetings have increased continually over these many years and have made the long-standing price point unsustainable.

After deferring this adjustment for a very long time, meeting fees have been increased slightly, as follows:

  • AFP and TAPPP members: $18.
  • Non-members: $25.
  • Late reservations will continue to be assessed an additional $5.00 fee.
  • Prospective members may still attend their first luncheon at no cost.
  • Speakers will continue to be our guest at our cost.
  • Webinars, sponsored by the Toledo Community Foundation, will continue to be offered at no cost.

Join Our Board

Two volunteer chapter board positions are currently available and being offered to the membership for their consideration:

Youth In Philanthropy Chair: This is a one-year term, beginning in January. Responsibilities include:

  • Provides leadership and direction for chapter engagement in Youth in Philanthropy (YIP).
  • Recruits a YIP committee to stay consistent with AFP standards and work with community youth groups and programs to create partnerships with AFP
  • Assists with recruiting nominations for the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Awards for NPD by reaching out to other organizations partnerships
  • Encourages AFP members to participate in youth philanthropy
  • Attend monthly Board and membership luncheon meetings
  • Prepares annual budget information for Executive Committee consideration
  • Participates (at any level) in the AFP BE the CAUSE campaign.

Chapter Ambassador: This is a new position created to provide a local contact and liaison in collaboration with the new Chapter Administrator.

Get Involved!

Joining a committee is a great way to maximize the benefits of your AFP membership, as well as a great way to network and get to know your fellow fundraisers. To learn more about the following committees, contact the committee chair or email info@afpnwo.org.

Membership Committee: The membership assists in the recruiting and retention of members in the Chapter. It also works in conjunction with the scholarship committee to recruit potential qualifying members. If potential members/scholars need information, inform the Chapter Administrator. Co-Chairs: Elizabeth Emmert (eemmert@sbcglobal.net) & Shelly Orenstein (sorenstein@istscience.org).

Program Committee: The Program Committee identifies topics, speakers, and opportunities for educational programs for the benefit and professional development of AFP Northwest Ohio Chapter members. Educational program formats include but are not limited to monthly membership meetings; webinars; special meetings such as evening membership meetings; conferences, etc. Responsibilities also include scheduling program speakers and webinar sessions; working with the Chapter Ambassador, who will manage all facility arrangements for AFP meetings and programs; and coordinating with the PR and Media Committee to help promote programs. National Philanthropy Day: The National Philanthropy Day committee is in charge of planning and executing the region's annual celebration of philanthropy. The event allows the community to honor outstanding fund-raising efforts in the area in the month of November. Meetings begin monthly beginning in March. Committee responsibilities include the coordination of: nominations process; invitation and program print materials; marketing and public relations; menu and decor; registration; and more. Co-Chairs: Daza Dzierwa (Dasa.Dzierwa@ProMedica.org) & Nancy Hamilton (NEHamilton@oprs.org).

Mentoring Committee: The mentoring assists in the recruiting mentoring pairs for the Chapter. If potential mentors/mentees need information, inform the Chapter Administrator. Co-Chairs: Renee Canfield (renee@dsagt.org) & Luke Reed (lukereed.ams@gmail.com).
